Frank w. Ockenfels 3 has been creating iconic images for over 20 years. He’s photographed all our favorite faces for publications like W, Rolling Stone, Esquire, GQ, and beyond. The master of shadows & light, alternative processes, experimentation and well, everything else in photography, manages to create darkly soulful portraits like no one else.

His first solo-exhibition, “Without Filter,” features an extensive collection of portraiture from throughout his career as well as “a selection from the 15 portrait sessions he shot with Bowie as well as his signature scrapbook series of collaged photo contact sheets and drawn imagery.”

Yello! caught up with the man himself for the chance to ask a couple Quick Questions. Here’s what he had to say:

SB: Your work seems to cross over into every genre. Which arena are you most comfortable in?

Photography.

SB: Is there an area you have yet to explore?

I’d like to pick up painting and stretching canvas–or work on a series of graffiti art.

SB: Which work do you want to be recognized for?

I’d like my overall body of work to be recognized–everything, as a whole.

SB: It seems like you are comfortable with more than a camera in your arsenal of tools. What are your most treasured tools?

Polaroids, ink and charcoal.

SB: What can we expect to see in this show?

The question should be ‘what will you not see in the show?’ It encompasses my creative meanderings–collages, drawings, photography and the way I’ve manipulated things over the years.

SB: What’s one thing you want to get straight?

That I’m not really a nice guy…[laughs]…kidding. That creativity is not based on one tool. A person’s career is about expressing oneself in every way possible and whatever you can pick up and throw against a wall.
