Review: SPD + Unsung Heroes of the American West

A photo from “Postscript: Anatomy of a Prison” – by Ted Soqui, recognized at last night’s event

Last night, SMASHBOX was happy to host the Society of Publication Designer‘s latest Speakeasy: Unsung Heroes of the American West. The event drew a cool collection of art directors, photo editors & creatives – all mixing & mingling amongst the booze, tasty tamales & our beautiful Stage 2 space (so fresh, so clean). SPD had 5 distinguished art directors & photo editors recognize & present the work of one of their favorite LA-based photographers. Those photographers included: Diana Koenigsberg, Betsy Winchell, Mathieu Young, Ted Soqui, and Jill Greenberg. Watching their images flash in front of us, I could feel the audience respond – marked by both compliments & curiosity.

Presenters Charlie Hess, Carol LeFlufy, Lisa Thackaberry, & Kathleen Clark  – all made a point to recognize & discuss the work and creative contributions of “unsung heroes” in photography. And if you’re thinking…”wait, Jill Greenberg? Unsung?”…yeah, so there was a bit of a mix-up. The presenter had just picked a “hero” & fav LA-based photographer. I wasn’t complaining though. Jill looked lovely and so did her images (particularly her “Glass Ceiling” series of underwater images). Check out some of that work…

All in all, it was a solid presentation of a wide-range of work – from glossy fashion imagery to nitty-gritty photojournalism. The quick format was quite a relief. It gave the audience the chance to ask each photographer about his/her work – but spent most time letting the work speak for itself.

The Society of Publication Designers is the only organization “specifically addressing the visual concerns of print and online editorial professionals.” Though a bigger presence in New York City, SPD’s family of art directors, designers, photo editors, and graphic professionals are savvy to the amazing Los Angeles talent we have out this way.

Keep up with The Society of Publication Designers & its events by checking out their website.
