Up-AND-COMING photographers from New York and L.A. met last week at Smashbox Studios’ 12th annual Face Off show, a judged exhibition spotlighting the work of photo assistants from both coasts. The setting — a SoHo loft-like studio space at Smashbox’s recently acquired West Hollywood compound — was more Manhattan than Hollywood, though a well-dressed cadre of local art fans, models and photo industry executives turned out to toast the fresh crop of talent. Quixote Studios in Allston had their grand opening on November 11th, and a week later the office space at the front was not quite furnished yet, looking a little bit like a broad, blank canvas waiting to be filled. Designed for still and film work, the studios were lined with Insul-Quilt for sound insulation, just as in many facilities, and the walls were tapered at the bottom to form infinity cycs for seamless backgrounds. The party, hosted by Smashbox and Mopla, curated by Dee deLara and Hossein Farmani , was thoroughly entertaining and completely satisfying. To my delight, the crowd was quite cultured as artist, photographers, and interesting personas from all walks of life filled the space. After mingling with the party’s wonderful attendance I made my way over to the centerpiece of the party, Smashbox’s 3D pop-up photo booth. The guest, including myself, all got a chance to embrace the camera by entering the booth and partaking in their own private photo sessions.
The photo subjects let their sense of humors shine, leading to some hilarious photos, which mirrored the convivial atmospheres of the soiree. To be able to attend such a marvelous party, was not only a pleasant surprise, but a privilege. Thank you to my friends at Smashbox for providing this Gentleman with an evening that will not soon be forgotten….
